Dan Buettner founded Blue Zones to showcase the world’s longest-lived and happiest communities. In 2021, he introduced The Blue Zones Challenge, a research-backed program designed to help people build healthier habits through improved nutrition, daily movement, and stronger social connections. Drawing on decades of scientific research and real-world data, the challenge provides a proven framework for enhancing both longevity and quality of life. This innovative approach later inspired the development of an engaging Mobile Game experience, making healthy living more accessible, interactive, and sustainable for users worldwide.
EVP and CMO, Naomi Imatome-Yun, approached Beehive with a vision to bring the Blue Zones philosophy to life through an engaging Mobile Game and interactive mobile app that would help users adopt and maintain healthier habits to support longevity. To lead the initiative, Paul Cummings was brought on as Product Manager. The goal was to create an immersive, habit-forming Mobile Game experience that motivates users to incorporate Blue Zones principles into their daily routines, seamlessly bridging the digital and physical worlds while encouraging long-term lifestyle change.
Following several weeks of discovery and deep immersion into the Blue Zones teachings and supporting longevity data, Beehive designed a gamified mobile app designed to turn daily healthy habits into engaging, rewarding experiences. The idea is for users to be encouraged to complete daily challenges aligned with Blue Zones principles, earning points. After testing multiple UI/UX and branding approaches, user feedback helped the Beehive team hone in on the most intuitive and engaging design that encourages daily play and makes healthy habits feel rewarding.
The platform is licensed to employers, cities, and insurance providers as a proactive health and wellness benefit for their members. To support customization at scale, Beehive also built an admin dashboard, allowing Blue Zones leaders to tailor challenges and experiences for different user groups across various organizations.
